It seems as though the cosmetics industry has no end of inventive new products heading the way of consumers left and right. Odd new concoctions like press on eyeshadow and hair feathers seem to come and go. One new aesthetic enhancement that is making big waves on runways and wedding aisles alike is paper eyelashes.
These black cardstock based lash line enhancers provide big and unnatural drama that is idea for a photo shoot or a special day. Presenting in amazing form and boasting characteristics like swirls, shapes, lace and twirls, they place an emphasis on the lashline that is unachievable with cheap false eyelashes. And, while there is no shortage of retailers that offer this alternative to party eye makeup, there are a brave few souls who elect to manufacture this ebony origami at home. Before you get started making paper eyelashes as home using our step by step tutorial however, there are some things to remember.
For starters, it’s unlikely that even this tutorial will help you replicate the peacock eyelashes and doily lace options you have seen in magazines. Most of these require machinery and tools that you aren’t likely to have handy. Additionally, the supplies available to you are probably different than those used by manufacturers, so your lashes may not look as professional as some that you can purchase online.
Lastly, regardless of how great you are at applying liquid eyeliner or blending foundation, applying paper eyelashes takes some degree of finesse and skill, and you may want to read up on another tutorial entirely to make sure that your efforts aren’t wasted on a bad application. With these caveats in mind, peruse this step by step tutorial to create your own delicate paper eyelashes at home!
1. Acquire black card stock. Remember, shades of black are not universal, and you may find that some variants are more grey or charcoal and less ebony. You want something that is very saturated in color for maximum drama.
2. Draw your selected design. For a size and shape reference, picking up a set of strip lashes is the best method if you are not using a template. You can use the false lashline as a guide for your paper eyelashes versions. Remember to keep your idea simple, especially on your first set. For symmetry, draw one lash first. Once you have cut it, you can always use it as a template for one or two more lashes, so that you achieve uniformity. Additionally, if you are unsure of your drawing skills, you can download templates online. These can be transferred to the card. There are several methods you can use, but one option is scoring – whereby the image is traced with a sharp point, leaving indentations that can be cut out later. For drawing images on black, a pencil will provide a silvery and almost metallic finish that can be identified on the surface.
3. Cutting will require a very sharp tool or Stanley knife. Cut the outside edges first and then start cutting the delicate innards of the images. You can either use the sharp edge of the tool to lift the tiny pieces of the paper eyelashes out, or use tweezers. Depending on the complexity of the idea, this can take quite some time.
4. Take your piece and shape it around a pen or a pencil and lightly roll it around the object. This will create a bit of curl that is more conducive to natural lashes, although your finished product will be anything but.
5. Trim the bottom of the design to leave just a thin strip below the design. This will be the part that attaches to the lashes.
6. Your second to last step of the tutorial is to apply the paper eyelashes to your own. You have two choices here. You can either bravely apply them yourself using store bought eyelash glue, or you can apply them first using eyelash glue to a set of strip lashes. This will make application even easier and will add depth to thin and sparse lashes.
7. Accentuating is the last step of our tutorial. You can either add just a bit of eyeliner, or some bright and colorful amazing eye makeup, the choice is yours. Remember to be careful though! You have a delicate and fragile work of art perched above your peepers, and considering the hard work you have put in, taking care of them while they’re on will now be even more of a priority!
