You have many choices available to you for enhancing the lash line. Most solutions, such as drugstore strip lashes or applying mascara, are temporary and don’t last more than a day. However, there are other options available for longer lasting looks than is afforded by glued on at home, or the wide range of everyday eye makeup used by most women. The most common and widely used of these are semi-permanent eyelash extensions. However, there is another option available to people looking for longevity – an eyelash transplant. The two eyelash enhancement options couldn’t be more different, but your choice between them will depend on several factors.

Semi are ideally suited for those with a big pocket book and a desire to have consistently lush and luxurious lashes. They greatly enhance the lash line by adding length, volume and curl. Mink lashes, the best available, provide a natural feathery appearance that combines luxurious elegance with a natural and organic look. They are applied by a technician using the best available, professional grade glue, and are applied individually to the tips of the top and bottom lashes. Typically safe and non irritating, extensions provide long wear (up to 8 weeks with fill ins) and pose little problems with removal since the extensions fall out naturally as your own lashes shed (although many dislike the straggly grown out appearance and elect to have them removed instead.)

There are some problems to semi of this type though. In some cases, overuse of the extensions can cause damage to the natural lashes (although uncommon). Additionally, removal (even by a professional) carries some risk of removing a couple of natural lashes here and there. Lastly, while these semi permanent do last awhile, they require expensive touch ups and fill ins in-between to maintain their glam appearance.

A relatively newer option for people wanting truly permanent fluffy eyelashes is a transplant. For some people, these surgical procedures are a means to correct aftermath from health problems that have caused lash loss. Others simply elect the procedure for sparse, thin or whether as a result of trauma or pulling. Regardless, there are some benefits to a lash transplant that simply aren’t possible with semi or other types of lash enhancers. For one, the procedure is completely permanent. The lashes grow (and, often quickly, requiring trimming) just like yours and even may require curling – because they are made from your own head hair. Hairs removed from follicles at the back of the scalp are sewn into the eyelids one at a time to provide permanent and lasting lash enhancement. The procedure of course, is not without its drawbacks. For those who think that semi permanent are expensive, they staggering cost of transplanted lashes may shock. At $3,000 or so per eye, they are anything but affordable. Additionally, they require an invasive procedure to apply, as opposed to professionally applied falsies, which are painless (many people sleep during application).

The choice between the two will greatly depend on your budget and long term goals. For those who want everyday glamour and don’t mind an occasional trip to the salon, semi are the way to go. For people who want a long term solution and can bear the expense, a transplant may be a good option. However, both methods require maintenance, commitment, time and money to maintain.
